Baker Vehicle Helps Barrington GC Go Orange

April 01, 2009

The decision to change golf course maintenance equipment suppliers is a tough one to make, as many courses and superintendents have allegiances to one company that run deep. But when it becomes clear that one group’s equipment is simply a better fit for a particular situation, the decision to switch gets a little bit easier.

Three SLF-1880s from Baker Vehicle opened
the door for Barrington Golf Club to become
a predominantly orange course.

Barrington Golf Club is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course located in Aurora, Ohio, that opened for play in 1994. Just before a superintendent change two years ago, Lenny Marino and Baker Vehicle got a foot in the door when the club decided to buy two new SLF-1880s to use on their fairways. When the new superintendent and his staff arrived, the results they saw were impossible to overlook.

“We had two SLF-1880s out there through the previous superintendent, but when Mark, the new superintendent, arrived two years ago he was not a Jacobsen guy plus his head mechanic was a former sales rep for another company so it wasn’t totally clear about what he was going to do,” Marino said. “Once he got in there he decided that he really liked the 80-inch stripe and everything else he was seeing with the two 1880s, so he came back to us to buy another one.”

With about 35-acres of fairways to mow, Barrington Golf Club was now set with three Jacobsen fairway units, but they still weren’t convinced to turn their greens and rough mowers over to orange.

“Once the mechanic started to work on the 1880s, he just loved the cutting units in terms of maintenance and performance,” Marino said. “Eventually, we helped them make the decision to go with Jacobsen on their greens, and they became the first course in the area to buy Eclipse walkers as their primary greens mowers.”

Just recently, Marino and Baker Vehicle reached another successful deal with Barrington Golf Club, resulting in the purchase of four AR-3 rotaries to take care of the rough. In the span of two years after the arrival of a superintendent who had roots and contacts with other suppliers in the area, Barrington Golf Club is now a predominantly orange course with AR-3s in the rough, SLF-1880s on the fairway and Eclipse 122-F walkers on the greens.

“They still have some older red and green machines in the garage, but they like the results they are seeing from the orange equipment they have, and they’re happy with the service they're getting from us.” Marino said.

Thanks to the hard work of Marino and Baker Vehicle, it looks like Barrington Country Club has found their orange equipment to be a fine fit.
