Cushman Turf-Trucksters Tackle the Heavy Work at Rolling Hills
September 01, 2009
Over the past 40 years the Cushman Turf-Truckster from Jacobsen, has led the way in heavy-duty utility vehicles. And that’s something to which Jim Pitman, CGCS, director of golf course operations at Rolling Hills Country Club in Los Angeles will testify. Jacobsen is a Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT) company.

“I’ve recently purchased two Turf-Trucksters and they are, without doubt, the best heavy-duty utility vehicles on the market,” he said. “I’ve gone for the gas version with automatic transmission and it’s proved to be a great combination. It can carry almost one-and-a-half tons and that means fewer trips and better productivity. I’ve got 27 guys working for me — 21 on the golf course and six on facilities maintenance and that’s where the auto version scores. It’s safe and simple to operate.
“A major factor in the purchase was the attitude of our local Jacobsen dealer, Golf Ventures West. They really stepped up to the plate with a truly professional service, especially their sales guy, Len Ochs. Jacobsen and its dealer network are really making an effort to be the very best with quality equipment such as the Turf-Truckster.”
Jim has been at Rolling Hills for the past 10 years, having previously worked for ClubCorp as a regional superintendent in Southern California and in South Florida at the Inverrary Country Club, Lauderhill, as director of agronomy at the 54-hole Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed courses.
Rolling Hills Country Club was the vision of Omer K. Tingle, a retired Army Air Force navigation instructor, who built the original 9-hole course back in 1963. The course featured two large lakes and a unique ‘island tee’ that was in the center of the lake on the ninth hole with pedestrian access over two wooden bridges.
In 1973, the course was extended to its present 18-holes and there are plans for a new 18-hole course, designed by Arnold Palmer, together with an impressive 60,000 sq. ft. clubhouse.
